Mutant Abilities:
ATP Manipulation- The ability to enhance or hinder the body of any creature in its ability of making ATP, which is the energy source of all living animals and plants. This also means the control over the strength of any metabolic process, such as breathing, motion, thought, or powers. At stronger levels, this can be used to stop the mitochondria from producing ATP altogether and slowly shut down the body. Physically touching the person or object will cause a greater effect from Yao.
Super Empathy- This is a secondary ability that acts like a balance for the main ability. Yao can sense the emotions of others around him, even more so when physically touched by a person. At stronger levels, this can be used to control emotions in others, such as making them happy or depressed. Although this last technique is most effective went Yao is physically touching the person. Another way to use this would be to imprint an object with a certain emotion that would “infect” those who touch it. He usually needs to touch someone to fully feel their emotions or control them.

Personality: Yao is usually fairly calm and collected, as this helps him keep control over his empathy. He is calculated in his plans, but has become adept in controlling his anger if things go wrong. To keep his empathy and mental state in check he meditates daily. To his members he is kind, but keeps business as a first priority. He keeps a certain amount of himself reserved, not wanting anyone to get too close to him (again). This makes him give off a certain air of apathy, despite his powers. It would take something very strong either inside or outside Yao to make him react strongly to something, causing most people not to know that he’s an empath.
While Yao spends a good deal of time in the Brotherhood HQ, he can be found roaming the city. This helps keep him in the loop on the conditions of human/mutant relations.
Background: Yao was the only child of a fairly normal Chinese family. He was brought to America as a small child, around two, when his father was offered a job as a chef in a restaurant owned by a friend. He was primarily raised by his mother in their home in Chinatown on 84 Bayard Street. After two years, Yao’s parents began noticing that their son was extremely skittish in crowds, often clinging to one of them. They thought was just a sign of their son having a shy personality, something he could grow out of as he got older and got used to America and the city. Their assumption turned out to be wrong, as they found out when they took Yao for a stroll on the Brooklyn Bridge for the first time. Instead of walking, Yao stopped right at the edge of the bridge, staring at it before falling to the ground crying. No matter what his parents said or tried to do their son would not walk or stop crying until they left the bridge. The only explanation Yao could give for his actions was that he “felt too sad and angry” as well as other things he wasn’t sure how to explain.
His parents tried to take him across the bridge other times and in different ways, but Yao would always cry. When they would go into the subway, there were certain areas Yao wouldn’t go to because he felt scared. He would run past allies for the same reasons. Eventually, Yao’s behavior became so erratic with him running away or crying that his parents finally took him to a doctor before he started school. The doctor diagnosed young Yao as having an anxiety disorder, quickly placing the child on a prescription to help and suggesting that he either wait a year before starting school or be homeschooled. Luckly, for the Wangs, there was another family friend who homeschooled her children and was willing to take on Yao, who seemed comfortable enough with her and the other children to not upset his “anxiety”. They also saw this as a better option for their son’s schooling anyway. He would not be completely Americanized as they saw it, and he wouldn’t forget where his culture and where he came from.
For quite a few years Yao continued his life without any other complication. He grew up learning everything a normal child would, with the addition of learning Chinese, Calligraphy, and Chinese history. They made a few trips to China, where Yao would see his extended family. By the time Yao was ready for high school, his teacher had to recommend him to a normal high school. Yao’s anxiety seemed to have faded as he grew up, and he had been taken off his medication. Yet he always seemed more sensitive to others feelings and was still uneasy in crowds. Still there wasn’t any reason to keep Yao out of school any longer. At first things seemed to be going fine. Yao fit in with the other teenagers at the high school, although his choice of clothes more reflected his culture than the latest fashion. Some gave him a hard time for looking like a girl with his long hair and wearing “dresses”, but it didn’t seem to bother him much.
Trouble came during his junior year, when Yao noticed a teacher’s plant not doing so well. Without really thinking about it, he touched one of the leaves on the plant in passing. Later that same day Yao noticed it was doing much better. He touched it again, thinking how he wished it would heal faster, and while he was holding it the plant began repairing itself and becoming less limp. Unsure of what was happening Yao ran away, not talking about the incident to anyone.
The next day a group of boys confronted Yao in the hallways, as they had seen what he had done to the plant. They began pushing and hitting him, claiming he was a “mutant freak”. Yao of course denied being a mutant. He couldn’t be one of them. What happened with the plant was a coincidence. The boys, however, weren’t going anywhere until they got a confession, even if they had to beat it out of Yao. When Yao realized this, he saw no other way except to defend himself, the emotions of the fighters and those who were supporting them were getting stronger around him and blurring his thought. As one of Yao’s attackers tried to punch Yao, he grabbed his arm and just thought of draining all the energy from his body. Suddenly the immense hate that Yao felt from the boy was turned to fear as his arm went limp and he slowly dropped to the floor. The atmosphere completely changed. No everyone was scared, even Yao.
What had he done?
The next day he found himself branded with the official title of mutant. What he had done to help the teacher’s plant and take out the boy were signs of his ability to manipulate ATP. His earlier anxiety disorder was actually his developing empathy powers. Due to the negative emotions marking the Brooklyn Bridge, it had overloaded Yao’s hypersensitivity. The doctors thought it best for Yao to attend the Xavier School, but he declined. Yao just wanted to be normal. His parents hired a teacher to home school Yao so he could graduate high school. However, he did not think of applying for college…not yet at least.
At 19, Yao moved out of his parents’ home to an apartment on West 15th Street in Chelsea. He couldn’t bear to see them suffer anymore. They always acted like they were walking on eggshells around him. He didn’t want that for them, after all they had done. He got a job at a local shop to help pay rent. While Yao never had any trouble with his ATP powers after that incident at school his empathy still gave him grief. Usually he managed to suppress it, but it didn’t help his mental state to feel how horrible people’s lives were if he accidently bumped into them. To help with this, Yao turned to smoking. At first it was just regular cigarettes, but that changed after he met a blonde Englishman in Washington Square Park who gave him his first hit of opium, which seemed to solve Yao’s problem. The Englishman, named A-K, became Yao’s dealer and best friend. There had never been anyone else Yao felt more strongly attached to before.
Unfortunately, this changed when Yao was 24. He got into an “accident” with his ATP powers as he was coming down from a high. He doesn’t remember too many details from the incident, and doesn’t like to talk about it. He attempted to make contact with A-K, but failed. The only thing he remembers clearly is shaking in an alley when a stranger came up to him, offering to help him, that he understood his troubles with his powers. This stranger turned out to be a member of the Brotherhood. They embraced him, taught him that his abilities were nothing to be ashamed of, and that he could be in control of them instead of at their mercy. He had no need to fear humans, but the humans needed to fear him. During the beginning of his time in the Brotherhood, they de-toxed him to rid him of his dependency on drugs, this being the most painful time followed by controlling his empathy. He also cut his hair as a sign of leaving his past life and disconnecting him from it.
After years of training, Yao became a much stronger mutant and much more destructive, which helped the Brotherhood given how subtle his powers’ effects are. This, and other credentials, led to Yao taking on the role as leader of the Brotherhood after the previous leader were captured and detained by the government. This is his current position today, as he tries to push Mutant Rights using any means necessary. One of his favorite items to "infect" are dragon tiles or coins, causing him to gain the code name "Dragon" by authorities when they find the "infected". Brotherhood members call Yao by the same code name for the same reason and that he has a dragon on the back of his coat.
