 Spell Index Empty
PostSubject: Spell Index    Spell Index I_icon_minitimeFri Nov 16, 2012 7:30 am

To make these easier for those of you unfamiliar with the spells in the series, or just can't be stuffed to remember more than 50 nonsensical words that you'll never need to use in your daily lives, I have made this list, organising the spells by year they are taught! Please note that this is for all purposes a RECOMMENDATION of the spells your characters are capable of using. Just because I have placed something in a year above your character's year does not mean they can at no time ever use or learn to use the spell.

For future references, all spells can be treated non-verbally. However, only sixth and seventh years students are taught how to do this (because non-verbal spells can go horribly wrong). Although, just because only the sixth and seventh years can do this, doesn't say that they can for every spell - it's a skill not all adults can master, so remember that! There is nothing better than screaming your incantation out.

To make your own spell, fill out this form and post below:

*note: while it seems to be a spell that Snape invented, Dark Magic is not taught at Hogwarts, so by default this must be learnt in your own time.

Incantation: Vulnera Sanentur
Effect: Heal injuries ranging from minor cuts to deep gashes. Repeat spell three times; the first time it is used, the flow of blood eases up; the second time causes the wounds to knit; the third time removes most visible injuries near-instantly.

UNKNOWN
Incantation: Alarte Ascendare
Effect: To throw the targeted object into the air.
Used by Lockhart in the Duelling Club. (And since Lockhart can't use any spell beyond forth year capability...)

Incantation: Anteoculatia
Name of Spell: Antler Hex
Effect: Causes the target to grow antlers.
Used by the Wesley twins in their sixth year, unsure if they invented this spell or not. (Disscussion?)

Incantation: Arania Exumai
Name of Spell: Spider Killing Curse
Effect: A spell used to kill or, at least, blast back acromantulas (a breed of giant spiders) or other large spiders.
Used by Harry in his second year but he learnt the spell from Tom Riddle who was a fifth year at the time. (I can guess this isn't a common spell otherwise Ron wouldn't have such a problem with his fear of spiders)

Incantation: Aparecium
Effect: This spell makes invisible ink appear.
Used by Hermione in the second year. (So, as she's the only one that seemed to know that spell at the time, should I assume she read ahead or that it was taught in class?)

Incantation: Bombarda Maxium
Effect: Creates a big explosion that can take down entire walls.
Used by Umbridge in the fifth book. (But since Bombarda is used in the third year, it's not going to take a genius to figure out adding "maxium" will make it stronger)

Incantation: Cave Inimicum
Effect: Spell used to strengthen an enclosure and warns of approaching enemies.
Used by Hermione on the tents in the seventh book. (It doesn't seem like a typical spell taught from school, so I didn't think it'd fit into the last year or previous years)

Incantation: Duro
Effect: Makes the object hard.
Class: Transfiguration
Used in the last book by Hermione. (But the spell seems kind of easy, so I vote to push up when it's taught?)

Incantation: Ennervate
Effect: Used to bring stunned individuals back to consciousness. It can also counter spells that causes unconsciousness or full body binding.
It was mentioned by Rowling in an interview, so I got nothing. (Yes she did renamed it Ennervate when it had been called Rennervate previously)

Incantation: Erecto
Effect: To set things up, or raise them.
Class: Charms
Used by the trio to set tents up in the last book. (Again, easy kind of spell... so again, bring up the year it was taught in?)

Incantation: Expecto Patronum
Name of Spell: Patronus Charm
Effect: Conjures an incarnation of the caster's innermost positive feelings, such as joy, hope, or the desire to survive, known as a Patronus
Class/Distinction: Degence Against the Dark Arts
Used by Harry in the third year. (But since it's not supposed to be learnt that early, discuss when it should be used?)

Incantation: Furnunculus
Name of Spell: Furnunculus Curse
Effect: Causes a person to break out in boils when it comes in contact with their skin.
Used by different students in third and forth years. (I wasn't sure whether to assume that this was a third year spell or not)

Incantation: Glisseo
Effect: Causes the steps on a stairway to flatten and form a ramp, slide, or chute.
Class: Transfiguration
Used by Hermione in the seventh book, but it usage has been mentioned in earlier books. (I'm just unaware of any students who used it before, so I cannot trace which year it has common usage in)

Incantation: Homorphus
Name of Spell: Homorphus Charm
Effect: Causes an Animagus or a transfigured object to assume its normal shape.
Class: Transfiguration
Used by Sirius Black and Lupin to reveal the animagus Scabbars as Peter Pettigrew in the third book, but it's unknown what year one might learn this spell.

Incantation: Langlock
Effect: Glues the victim's tongue to the top of their mouths.
A spell invented by the “half-blood prince”. (In other words, not a typical spell taught in school, what should I do with it?)

Incantation: Levicorpus
Effect: Causes a victim to be hoisted into the air and dangle upside-down, and is intended to be performed nonverbally.
Learnt from the notes Snape scribbled on his old potion's book, but the spell itself seems common. (Discuss?)

Incantation: Liberacorpus
Effect: Counter-curse for Levicorpus
Also learnt from the notes Snape scribbled in his old potion's book. (Look above for reason)

Incantation: Lumos Maxima
Effect: A stronger version of Lumos.
Used by Harry before he had left the Durlsey's for his third year. (I can assume he learnt it in his second year but... better left up for discussion since he learnt the first spell in his first year?)

Incantation: Locomotor
Effect: Enchants an object or creature, causing them to move where the spellcaster wishes.
*note: To use this charm, you must first say the incantation, and then whatever it is that you are trying to move, for example, "Locomotor Trunk"
Used by various students over the years, it's tricky to track this down to one year.

Incantation: Mobiliarbus
Effect: Lifts a tree a few inches off the ground and levitates it to where the caster points his or her wand.
Used by Hermione in the third year. (Again, undecided if she read ahead or if this had been already taught in class)

Incantation: Mobilicorpus
Effect: Lifts a body a few inches off the ground and levitates it where the caster points his or her wand.
Only has been used by adults. (but since a similar spell can be used by Hermione, then it should stand to reason that they'd learn it at school)

Incantation: Muffliato
Effect: Keeps nearby people, or those to whom the wand is directed, from hearing nearby conversations.
Another spell created by Snape, only found in his old potions book. (again, more discussion)

Incantation: Obscuro
Effect: Creates a blindfold over the victim's eyes which obstructs their view of their surroundings.
Used by Hermione in the seventh book, on a painting. (Considering the rarity of this predicament actually showing up, couldn't find an earlier record of the spell)

Incantation: Protego Totalum
Effect: Used to protect a small area from most other spells, behind a forcefield/bubble like shield.
Class: Defence Against the Dark Arts.
Used by the trio in the last book, to protect their camp site. (this is only another up-grade from protego, so it stands to reason they should learn it in an earlier year)

Incantation: Quietus
Effect: Makes a magically magnified voice return to normal. Counter-spell to Sonorus.
Used only by adults in the books, so I'm uncertain if this is taught at school or not.

Incantation: Reducto
Name of Spell: Reductor Curse
Effect: Used to blast solid objects into pieces.
Class: Defence Against the Dark Arts
First used by Harry in his forth year, but it doesn't appear to be in common use until the fifth year... which again was only an exception because Harry had taught the DA this. (In other words, circumstance in the book muddles when this spell should actually be taught)

Incantation: Relashio
Name of Spell: Revulsion Jinx
Effect: Forces an object or person to release its hold on something.
It is mostly used in the last book, but there's been odd references to it being used by Harry in the forth and fifth books. (but the incantation was never written)

Incantation: Scourgify
Name of Spell: Scouring Charm
Effect: Cleans the targeted object.
Appears to be common use to anyone grown up in a wizarding family. (So I kind of doubt it's something taught at school, discussion on this?)

Incantation: Serpensortia
Name of Spell: Snake Summons Spell
Effect: Conjures a snake.
Class: Transfiguration
While Draco used this in his second year, he only did so when Snape told him how to use the spell. (It's obvious that the spell isn't something normally taught to second years, but since it's never used again I can't find a placement for this spell)

Incantation: Sonorus
Effect: Amplifies someone's voice to become loud enough to be heard over a great distance
As with Quietus, this has only been used by adults so I don't know if it's taught at school or not.

Incantation: Ventus
Effect: Creates a gust of wind.
It only appears in the video games, supposedly learnt before the forth year, but since there seems to a similar spell mentioned in the book (I believe fourth or fifth year usage) it'd be a good idea to use this incantation for it.

Incantation: Vipera Evanesca
Effect: Counterspell for Serpensortia. Makes a summoned snake vanish.
Used by Snape and Dumbledore in books two and five respectively. (But since the spell is meant to get rid of summoned snakes, it seems like that'd be something taught in a class)

Incantation: Waddiwasi
Effect: Removes impacted objects and launches them through the air at a target.
Used by Lupin in the third book. Similar spell appears to be used by Voldemort in later books. (and this is me giving up... DAMMIT LAST SPELL, I wanted to be done)
